From May 8 – 24, 2014 Narwhal is proud to present the first Canadian exhibition with Japanese master Toshio Saeki. “Toshio Saeki conjures death with a pen,” wrote the late Japanese critic, poet, and playwright Shūji Terayama, in a letter to the artist in 1969. In 1970, Saeki published Toshio SAEKI art book, which became such a success he was invited to host a solo exhibition in Paris. He released an early collection of 50 self-published drawings, which were a critical success. I first encountered his work in 2011, and began to research it more deeply in 2012, curating an exhibition in London in 2013.
